About Us

Bonnie Solovan interviewed Charley Greenway at the March 2008 shoot in Brady, Texas. Charlie Greenway, a TMLRA member since, 1955 relayed the following information about the early history of the TMLRA for this website.
Originally the TMLRA was started in 1946 at Camp Maybry in Austin, Texas and remained there for about 2 years. Then the organization moved to Camp Bowie near Brownwood, Texas and were there for about 2 years.
Then the TMLRA moved to Lake Nasworthy near San Angelo, Texas, remaining there until 1966. Then in October of 1966 the City of Brady, Texas invited the TMLRA to move to the Kenneth Medlock range which is located adjacent to Brady Lake. The TMLRA has called Brady, Texas home since that time.
Jerry Rhodes, Ben Dobson, and Bill Lowery helped build the first 300 feet of firing line. They put up a Certificate of Deposit (CD) at the Brady Bank as collateral for the money they borrowed to build the covered firing lines. The 300 feet of covered firing line was added to the original 50 feet of firing line that the Brady Rod and Gun Club had originally built at the range. Two years later another 160 feet of covered firing line was added due to the overwhelming attendance during those days.
The TMLRA has seen many changes over the years and has remained a constant for many of the other muzzle loading organizations in and around the Texas area. Each year the TMLRA hosts the Texas State Championship as well as three other sanctioned shoots throughout the year.
The TMLRA has become what it is today because of its members and their devotion to this great organization. The members are like family, especially when you consider how many years we have been shooting together. We welcome new members and their families to come and shoot and to have fun. There are matches for men, women and youth.
Another important aspect of the TMLRA is the young shooters who regularly participate at our yearly matches. We will have a special section on the TMLRA website soon for the young shooters. This Youth Section will be a place where the young shooters can post photos, upcoming events, scores from other shoots, stories, and just a fun place that they can call their own.
We realize that the young muzzle loaders who attend our shoots are the ones who will eventually inherit the TMLRA.
